Gilera was founded by Giuseppe Gilera in 1909 producing their first motorcycle, the VT 317. Following the success of the 317, Gilera went on to build the 500cc side valve motorbikes that went on to win a number of major international races of the 1920s.
Gilera followed up their success with the Gilera Rondine, a cross racing motorbike that set a new world record of 274.181 kph in 1937.
Prior to their exit from racing in 1957, Gilera had won some 44 international Grand Prix titles in total.
To this day Gilera are still manufacturing performance vehicles, and in 2000 revolutionised the world of motorbikes and scooters with the Gilera DNA.

The DNA model was known as the ‘scooter which thinks it’s a motorbike’, and is a hybrid of the two vehicles. The DNA’s high speed performance, quick acceleration and braking capabilities liken it more to a motorbike, whereas it’s overall comfort and helmet compartment make it feel more like a scooter.
Regardless of whether you happen to own a Gilera motorbike or a modern day Gilera scooter, you’ll still need to have a good insurance policy to go with it.
As with all types of bike insurance it is important to be aware that any modifications you make to your bike may well increase your insurance premiums. Your insurer will often view bike modifications such as engine mods or any aesthetic changes as being desirable to thief’s and therefore bump up the cost of your insurance.
Members of the Gilera Owners Club can receive a 10% discount on bike insurance, with some insurers offering new online customers discounts of up to 20% for their motorbike cover.
When shopping around for bike insurance online, it always makes sense to compare several quotes before committing yourself to one company.
