How Bike Modifications Can Affect Your Insurance Premium

Bike PremiumsMany motorbike owners are still failing to inform their insurers about any modifications they make to their bike. In a somewhat worrying trend, some bikers fear that the changes will cause a dramatic increase in their insurance premiums, whilst others aren’t even aware that they need to.

However, in most cases many of the most common bike modifications have little to no effect on insurance premiums at all.

By not informing your insurer of any changes or mods to your motorbike you risk the insurer refusing to pay out when a claim is made – especially if the bike modification was a factor in the claim.

The most common bike mods in the UK tend to have virtually no impact on insurance premiums with the most popular modifications including crash bars, crash mushrooms, road legal after-market exhausts, huggers, up-rated braking systems and a five per cent increase in engine capacity.

Bike modifications that may result in a moderate premium increase include new wheels, suspension, Dynojet and tank pads. Whilst mods that would likely be expensive to insure including increasing engine capacity over five per cent, custom motorcycles and nitrous oxide injection.
